    Default fee attached to -80

Which is the proper billing for an assistant surgeon? My OB/GYN's like to asisst each other, so we bill alot of surgery assists. Say the primary surgeon fee was $2000. My office has historically billed assistant surgeon at 1/2 the amount of the primary surgeon and attached a modifer -80 to the assistant. So we are billing primary surgeon at $2000. and the assist surgeon at $1000. with -80 attached. Is this proper? Should be we billing the same fee for the primary surgeon and the assistant surgeon with -80 attached to the assistant?
thanks in advance for your reply's.

it is proper to bill the primary surgeon the higher dollar amount and the assistant the lower amt. with modifier 80. Otherwise, it would be considered duplicate charges.
