Billing for testing when can't be completed

  1. Question Billing for testing when can't be completed
    Medical Coding Books
Our practice has 3 clinical psychologists and occassionally we run into a situation in which they start to do testing on a patient (96118) but then are unable to complete the testing because the patient is unable to answer questions, etc. Can we bill for any authorized units/amount since our psychologists attempted the testing or can we only bill for the actual time spent? If anyone has an answer to this it would be helpful. Thank you.

    Default 96118
We have this situation alot with patients with TBI...that they may be unable to complete the testing.
We've coded these depending on how many hours were completed per appointment.

Try the trailblazer LCD for advice:

I read somewhere that Medicare only covers for 8 units of 96118 per year...but don't remember where I saw this.

Found some Q&As from medicare that may help : )
