Hello, I am new to coding in an outpatient setting. I have a patient with an A1c of 6.1 which comes back as pre diabetes. The doctor is wanting to code this as actual diabetes with 250.00. Is this acceptable since the A1c shows pre diabetes?

hello. I would assign 790.29 (abnormal glucose), since the doc did not document that the patient has Diabetes of any type. hope that helps. This should also be a covered dx under Medicare I believe.

Once upon a time when you look in the alpha listing look for the term pre diabetes, it use to be there but I am without a book at the moment, then it leads you to abnormal glucose.
    this is from ICDdata.com
    790.29 Alternative Terminology
    Applies To

    Abnormal glucose NOS
    Abnormal non-fasting glucose
    Hyperglycemia NOS
    Pre-diabetes NOS

Also I believe if you go to the tabular listing you will see this information in the book
