H&P done in EC but not Admitted until Next Day

  1. Default H&P done in EC but not Admitted until Next Day
    Medical Coding Books
Having trouble with this...The Hopitalist was called to the EC to consult on a pateint and did an H & P for admission. However the patient stayed in the EC until the next day. The Hospital has the inpatient day starting on the second day...How can I code this??? I have some saying we can use that H & P and bill the admission on the actual admission date(even though done a day earlier) and others say it should be a consult in the EC and on the admission day we can bill for admission by the other physician as long as they refer to the H & P..Any help would be greatly appreciated..Tina

Default Code the service on the day it was provided
Code the initial hospital visit on the day the service was provided, even if the patient didn't actually get out of the ER and into an inpatient bed until the next day.
This happens with some frequency .. patient present in the late evening, the physician sees patient in the EDTC and dictates the admission note, but the hospital registration isn't completed until after midnight (i.e. the next day).
