We have an insurance company stating that this is invalid for persons over 6 yrs old. I cannot find where this is documented. Pt is over 18 yrs and came in for HPV and this dx is the one we always use. Has there been an update to IDC -9 that I am not aware of? Thanks in advance for your help.

That is the diagnosis we are using. It is also the diagnosis recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics in their 2009 coding for Pediatrics book.

    Refer to Coding Clinic below:

    Human papilloma virus vaccine
Coding Clinic, Second Quarter 2007 Page: 11
    Effective with discharges:
    June 30, 2007

What code should be reported for the new human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine?

Assign code V04.89, Need for prophylactic vaccination and inoculation against certain viral diseases, Other viral diseases, for an encounter for the HPV vaccination.
