Understanding the Importance of Documenting Modalities in 2018 Webinar

CPT® defines supervised and constant attendance modalities as “any physical agent applied to produce therapeutic changes to biologic tissue; includes but not limited to thermal, acoustic, light, mechanical, or electric energy.” Some modalities are “supervised” by the therapy provider, but don’t require one-on-one contact during modality delivery. These are defined as “constant attendance” services that require one-on-one contact with the provider. The importance in documenting these services is just as important as the evaluation the physical therapist obtains from a new patient. In the age of the electronic medical record, providers can easily get caught into the cloning of notes.

Why is this topic important?
We will explore modalities and the importance of appropriate documentation for billing and how these CPT® codes are being audited and evaluated for medical necessity.

Who would benefit from this topic?
Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Billers and Coders

How would this benefit the individual and/or their company?
Medical necessity is the number one denial for healthcare facilities across all states, and this is most often tied to improper or sparse documentation. All staff need to understand the importance of correct coding and documentation principles as stated in CPT®.

What information or new skills will the attendee take away from this webinar?
Understanding the importance of auditing “modalities” can assure you are compliant and proactive in helping providers be sure to establish medical necessity for these services. You will also be able to understand the need for appropriate documentation in coding and billing for these services.

Why is the presenter the expert on this topic?
I have been billing and coding compliance for over 30 years. As a compliance specialist for “InTouch EMR Physical Therapy” I work the Nitin Chhoda, CEO, in establishing educational products for physical therapists and their staff. Working with healthcare organizations across the country, I educate Providers and their staff on how they can work towards achieving maximum reimbursement through appropriate coding and documentation. My consulting business, CCH Medical Consultants, has helped many healthcare facilities achieve coding compliance through correct documentation and knowing regulations as set forth by CMS and the insurance industry.
