As with other states on the West Coast, Washington features a high-performing job market and great earnings potential for medical coders. According to AAPC, the average annual salary for medical coders in the region in 2017 was $59,936. While California is one of the biggest markets for medical coders on the West Coast, Washington offers a similar market as neighboring Oregon. Major cities in Washington for medical coders include Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma.  

In-demand certifications for medical coders in Washington include CPC, CCPC and COBGC, which provide salaries in line with the state average. Via AAPC data, coders with a bachelor’s degree averaged around $56,000 annually, but medical coders with other educational backgrounds still had average earnings between $50,000 to $53,000. Entry-level medical coders should expect salaries around $36,000 to $45,000, but coders with more than five years of experience can expect to earn more than $50,000 annually.
