Hi all,

Is there anything that can be done about a patient that fails to add their primary insurance, fails to inform us of changes to insurance, fails to add secondary insurance, etc.? I'm just starting out in billing, and some of our claims are pretty convoluted because of these issues.

Thank you!

Does your front desk staff not check eligibility and validate patients' insurance prior to each appointment? If they're doing this (and doing it correctly), then they should be stopping the patient at check-in and not proceeding with the appointment until they have the correct information.

If that's not being done and your office just waits for the patients to give you their information (not a good practice in my opinion) then another option is to flag this particular patient's account. Based on the patient's history, you could ask them to make payment for the office visit up front, which would then be refunded once the insurance company makes payment. That would give your patient an incentive to give you the correct information, and it would also protect your practice financially.

Also, please check your PM and its scheduler system whether it has capability to present patient remainder balance, patient demographic update capability, and Insurance card scanning & updating capabilities. Most of the software has these features help eliminating many issues for a biller later. There are some more features a PM system must have, which will make biller's job more efficient, and effective. Your front desk person(s) are the people who you should train to do all these.
