2 Edits List 1 Anesthesia Service As Component of Another

Watch pain management coding with new anesthesia code 00561 Two edits in the National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) version 11.0 - effective Jan. 1, 2005 - list one anesthesia service as part of another anesthesia procedure. NCCI lists codes 01995 (Regional intravenous administration of local anesthetic agent or other medication [upper or lower extremity]) and 01996 (Daily hospital management of epidural or subarachnoid continuous drug administration) as components of new anesthesia code 00561 (Anesthesia for procedures on heart, pericardial sac, and great vessels of chest; with pump oxygenator, under one year of age).

Because 00561 describes services administered to patients less than 1 year of age, a pediatric intensivist or neonatal intensivist (and not the anesthesiologist) would provide postoperative pain management services, says Barbara Johnson, CPC, MPC, owner of Real Code Inc., in San Moreno, Calif.
