Reader Question:

Add Specific Modifiers for Screening Colonoscopy Anesthesia

Question: What is the guideline for reporting anesthesia during a screening colonoscopy?

Minnesota Subscriber

Answer: In the 2016 CPT® handbook, CMS finalized the 2015 policy modification, where the beneficiary deductible for anesthesia services will be waived when it is reported in addition to a colorectal cancer screening test even if it leads to removal during a colonoscopy.

Code it: You’ll need to add specific modifiers to anesthesia code 00810 (Anesthesia for lower intestinal endoscopic procedures, endoscope introduced distal to duodenum). These modifiers are 33 (Preventive service) for a screening colonoscopy and PT (A colorectal cancer screening test which led to a diagnostic procedure) for a screening colonoscopy that converts to a therapeutic colonoscopy.
