Reader Question:

Bis Monitor

Question: How do we bill separately for a bis monitor?

Maryland Subscriber

Answer: Anesthesiologists widely use the bis (bispectral index) to measure a patients awareness threshold because it promotes quicker recovery and the patient requires much less medication during anesthesia. Many physicians view it as an extra monitor included in their anesthesia delivery and consequently do not bill it.
