Reader Question:

Choose 00910 for Anesthesia During UroLift Procedure

Question: What anesthesia code should we use for surgery involving a UroLift?

Mississippi Subscriber

Answer: The UroLift system is used as part of a transurethral procedure so your best anesthesia code is 00910 (Anesthesia for transurethral procedures [including urethrocystoscopy]; not otherwise specified).

Explanation: According to NeoTract, Inc., the company that manufactures UroLift, the system is a “minimally invasive, permanent solution to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.” It lifts or holds the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way so that it doesn’t block the urethra. The surgeon implants the system without needing to cut, heat, or remove any prostate tissue.

UroLift is a new approach to treating BPH. Be sure to include thorough documentation of the surgeon’s work as well as your anesthesia provider’s work when you submit the claim.
