Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Choose Between 00400, 01260 for Sclerotherapy Anesthesia

Question: Our anesthesiologist was asked to be present during a sclerotherapy procedure on the patient’s thigh. The surgeon is coding 36471. What anesthesia code can I report?

Louisiana Subscriber

Answer: You have two options for anesthesia during sclerotherapy to the thigh: 00400 (Anesthesia for procedures on the integumentary system on the extremities, anterior trunk and perineum, not otherwise specified) or 01260 (Anesthesia for all procedures involving veins of upper leg, including exploration).

Reimbursement will be the same because both anesthesia codes are valued at three units plus time. Double check all the documentation and talk to your anesthesiologist to determine which of the anesthesia codes might be more accurate for the encounter.
