Reader Question:

Don't Rule Out Modifier -30

Question: I've never heard of modifier -30, but I have a carrier that requires it on some claims. What is it, and when does it apply?

Illinois Subscriber Answer: Modifier -30 (Consultation service during medical-legal evaluation) is a non-valid AMA/CPT modifier but is still in the RVU (relative value unit) system that some workers' compensation programs use for fee schedules. Workers' compensation plans are not required to be HIPAA-compliant, which means some carriers might still require modifier -30 for correct claims processing. Some carriers, such as Arizona Health-Net, go so far as to require modifier -30 with any CPT code.
