Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

EP Procedures

Question: What is the best way to code electrophysiologic procedures (EP studies) for Medicare patients?

Nevada Subscriber

Answer: Coding for EP studies is highly regional. Some carriers have created local codes, and others publish local medical review policies (LMRPs) on the subject. For more information, contact your local carrier or visit lmrp.net for a copy of your carriers LMRPs.

CPT codes 93600-93624 (all related to recording, mapping, pacing or inducing intracardiac electrophysiological procedures), however, may be acceptable surgical codes for EP studies. All of these codes cross-reference to the new anesthesia code 00537 (anesthesia for cardiac electrophysiological procedures including radiofrequency ablation), which is billed as 10 units plus time.
