Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Extent of Care Guides 00400 or 01810 Choice

Question: The anesthesiologist started an IV and administered a digital block for a finger wound repair. She monitored the patient and remained in the OR in case the patient needed more substantial anesthesia. How do we report her service? Minnesota Subscriber Answer: You'll submit the appropriate anesthesia code with time units. If the repair involved the integumentary system, report 00400 (Anesthesia for procedures on the integumentary system on the extremities, anterior trunk and perineum; not otherwise specified). If the surgeon repaired tendons during the procedure, the appropriate choice is 01810 (Anesthesia for all procedures on nerves, muscles, tendons, fascia, and bursae of forearm, wrist, and hand). Both 00400 and 01810 carry a base unit value of 3.
