Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Failed Labor Means 01967, 660.63

Question: Our anesthesia provider was called in to administer an epidural for a labor and delivery case. He inserted the epidural, but the patient did not deliver and was later released from the hospital. How should we code the case?Arkansas SubscriberAnswer: Because the patient received an epidural, you can report 01967 (Neuraxial labor analgesia/anesthesia for planned vaginal delivery [this includes any repeat subarachnoid needle placement and drug injection and/or any necessary replacement of an epidural catheter during labor]). For the diagnosis, classify the case as a failed trial of labor and submit 660.63 (Unspecified failed trial of labor antepartum).
