Reader Question:

Hemodilution

Question: Code 01980 (Acute normovolemic hemodi-lution [removal of >10% of estimated blood volume]) was deleted from the 2002 Relative Value Guide. Which code should be used in its place now? New York Subscriber Answer: CPT says that if a code's descriptor does not state which procedure is being performed, you must refer to the "unlisted-procedure" codes. With code 01980 no longer in use and with the procedure not being included in another code's descriptor, use 01999 (Unlisted anesthesia procedure[s]) to report the service.
