Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Include Documentation to Support Anesthesia During EEG

Question: Our provider administered general anesthesia for a patient having an EEG; her physician requested our assistance because of her behavioral issues and autism. Do I report an anesthesia code for this service, or a standard CPT® code? Should I append a modifier?

Answer: Most patients are able to have an EEG without anesthesia, so you’re coding for an out-of-the-norm situation. You’ll submit an anesthesia code, but CPT® 2018 does not include a code specific to this situation. Your best option is to report 01999 (Unlisted anesthesia procedure(s)) and append modifier 23 (Unusual anesthesia). Include clear, supporting documentation explaining why anesthesia was necessary for this patient’s procedure.
