Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Median Branch Nerve Injection

Question: Which CPT code should we bill for anesthetizing the median branch nerves alone or while performing a facet joint injection? Texas Subscriber Answer: Peripheral nerve injections are reported with codes 64400-64445. Code 64450* (Injection, anesthetic agent; other peripheral nerve or branch) should be used for any peripheral nerve not listed in the previous group (such as for the median branch nerves). If a facet joint injection is performed at the same session, report it with a code from 64470-64476, depending on the injection site. CCI does not show these two groups of injection codes bundled, so you can bill each of them.
