Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Nasal Intubation

Question: What is the correct CPT code for nasal intubation?

Maryland Subscriber

Answer: There is no difference in coding for oral, nasal or fiberoptic intubation. If it is a stand-alone procedure, code with 31500 (intubation, endotracheal, emergency procedure). If it is performed as part of an anesthetic, then it would be included in the procedures base units.

Whenever you bill with 31500, be sure the diagnosis code supports the reason for the emergency intubation. Even then, some carriers also may require written documentation to support the billing.
