Anesthesia Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Port-a-Cath ICD-9

Question: A patient had a Port-a-Cath inserted for chemotherapy, and now it is leaking. The diagnosis on the surgeons operative report is rupture left subclavian Port-A-Cath with leakage. The surgical procedure to fix the problem is insertion left subclavian Port-A-Cath over wire. What ICD-9 Code should I use for this repair?

Texas Subscriber

Answer: ICD-9 code 996.1 is for mechanical complication of other vascular device, implant and graft; code 996.74 is for other complication of internal prosthetic device, implant and graft due to other vascular device, implant and graft. Since you dont mention any type of infection and since it is not a thoracic implant, these two codes would be appropriate to use.
