Question: What is the code for thrombolysis of the lower extremity for deep vein thrombosis?

Answer: Use 01260 (anesthesia for all procedures involving veins of upper leg, including exploration) for the upper leg, 01430 (anesthesia for procedures on veins of knee and popliteal area; not otherwise specified) for the knee/popliteal area, or 01520 (anesthesia for procedures on veins of lower leg; not otherwise specified) for the lower leg. Code 00740 (anesthesia for upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, endoscope introduced proximal to duodenum) also may be an alternative. Check with a carrier representative to ensure they will accept the chosen code.
