Anesthesia Coding Alert

READER QUESTION:

Translumbar Port Placement

Question: How should I code for translumbar port placement for a patient who needs permanent IV access? Florida Subscriber Answer: Two possibilities are 36160 (Introduction of needle or intracatheter, aortic, translumbar) or 36533 (Insertion of implantable venous access device, with or without subcutaneous reservoir). Since 36160 states "translumbar" but also specifies an aortic procedure, check with the physician to determine the most accurate code.
