Reader Question:

Use of Modifiers for Medicare

Question: I understand that Medicare does not allow specific modifiers regarding age, health, etc., to be used. Could denial for any of these cases be appealed if emergency circumstances apply?

Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group

Answer: You are right that Medicare does not allow for these types of modifiers. However, you can try to appeal their decision if you feel that emergency circumstances apply to a particular case. The key is having enough documentation in the patients medical record to support your reasons for appeal.
