CCI Adds a Little Work for Anesthesia This Time

Question: Are there any recent CCI edits impacting anesthesiology?Maine SubscriberAnswer: Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) version 14.2, which went into effect July 1, creates a mutually exclusive edit bundling 36556 (Insertion of Non-Tunneled Centrally Inserted Catheter; age 5 years or older) into 93503 (Insertion and placement of flow directed catheter [e.g. Swan-Ganz] for monitoring purposes). The edit has a modifier indicator of "1," so you may override the edit in certain circumstances. For example, if the anesthesiologist places a CVP and Swan Ganz, you may override the edit with modifier 59 (Distinct procedural service) if documentation supports that each is in a separate location.
