Count Muscles for Iliopsoas Injection Code

Question: What CPT code applies to a steroid injection of the iliopsoas to help treat iliopsoas syndrome? Rhode Island Subscriber Answer: The term "iliopsoas" refers to the combination of three muscles -- the psoas major, psoas minor, and iliacus. Verify the number of muscles your physician injected separately, and code from there. If he injected one or two muscles, report 20552 (Injection[s], single or multiple trigger point[s], 1 or 2 muscle[s]). If the physician documented injecting three or more muscles, report 20553 (... single or multiple trigger point[s], 3 or more muscle[s]).
