READER QUESTIONS:

Report 00940 for Episiotomy Repair

Question: How should I code an episiotomy repair done under general anesthesia after the woman delivered her baby by natural childbirth? I need the surgical and anesthesia codes, but CPT's perineum repair codes are "non-obstetrical."

Answer: The best surgical code is 59300 (Episiotomy or vaginal repair, by other than attending physician). If the criterion of "by other than attending physician" doesn't fit your situation, you should report 59899 (Unlisted procedure, maternity care and delivery) instead of using a code from another CPT section. The corresponding anesthesia code is 00940 (Anesthesia for vaginal procedures [including biopsy of labia, vagina, cervix or endometrium]; not otherwise specified).
