Reader Questions:

Suprascapular block equals 64418

Question: A provider performed a suprascapular nerve block with an anesthetic and steroid. How should we code this? New Jersey Subscriber Answer: Your best choice is 64418 (Injection, anesthetic agent; suprascapular nerve). Physicians administer suprascapular nerve blocks to treat chronic shoulder pain caused by bursitis, arthritis, or periarthritis when an intra-articular or periarticular injection is inappropriate or contraindicated. The nerve also may become entrapped or injured from overuse of the shoulder, or trauma from scapular fractures, shoulder dislocations, or clavicular fractures.
