Reader Question:

Can a Chiropractic Bill for DME?

Question:The chiropractic decides that his patient requires a lumber belt for his condition. Can he bill for this as durable medical equipment?

California Subscriber

Answer: The chiropractic can bill for durable medical equipment (DME), prosthetics, orthotics and supplies, if he is a DME supplier and has a valid supplier number assigned by the National Supplier Clearinghouse. However, he will not be reimbursed if he orders the DMEs as chiropractic per se. Check with your payer to make sure you use the correct codes.
