Reader Question:

Coding Medical Decision-making

Question: When determining the level of medical decision-making and considering the number of diagnoses and management options, must the patient be admitted to qualify for new problem, additional work-up planned? Can you provide examples of when you can achieve this?

Tracy Bondi, RN
MBSI Physician Educator
Modesto, Calif.

Answer: No, the patient does not have to be admitted to the hospital. Additional work-up can include transfer to another facility (i.e., another hospital, nursing home, etc.), a scheduled appointment with a specialist for further evaluation and/or diagnostic testing.
