New E/M Guidelines on Hold

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has indefinitely delayed the development of a third and final set of E/M documentation guidelines. In a statement before the House Ways and Means Committee this summer, Thompson announced that he had directed Aspen Systems, the contractor that had been drafting an alternative to the 1995 and 1997 guidelines, to stop its work while the government reassesses the project.
