Gastroenterology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Code Combo Is Key to FluMist Payment

Question: We are one of the few gastroenterology offices in our area administering the FluMist vaccine in the office this year. What can we report when we give the vaccine to patients in-office?

New York Subscriber Answer: When your staff gives the FluMist vaccine in-office, you can typically report a pair of codes to the insurance company. On the claim, you should report:

90660 (Influenza virus vaccine, live, for intranasal use) for the FluMist supply.

90473 (Immunization administration by intranasal or oral route; one vaccine [single or combination vaccine/toxoid]) for the FluMist administration. - Clinical and coding expertise for this issue provided by Michael Weinstein, MD, a gastroenterologist in Washington, D.C., and former member of the CPT advisory panel; and Linda Parks, MA, CPC, CCP, an independent coding consultant in Marietta, Ga.
