Reader Question:

Gastrostomy Tubes

Question: We want to provide the service of manually replacing (not with a scope) gastrostomy tubes for patients while in their home or a nursing home facility. Which code should we use? Also, is this service generally covered by Medicare and commercial insurance companies, and what is the average billed amount?

Laurie Craig
Metro East Gastroenterology, Ltd., Belleville, Ill.

Answer: Code 43760 (change of gastrostomy tube) can be used for manually replacing a gastronomy tube, as well as an endoscopically assisted tube change. Medicare will reimburse approximately $65 for this procedure. For commercial insurance companies, reimbursement will generally range from $150 to $200.
