Reader Question:

Hot Snare Technique

Question: Should a hot snare procedure be classified as a hot biopsy or snare technique?

Sharon Cohen, RHIA, MSM
Winthrop, Mass.

Answer: A hot snare procedure is the same thing as the snare technique, according to Susan Callaway-Stradley, CPC, CCS-P, an independent coding consultant and educator in North Augusta, S.C. A snare is an instrument with a wire loop attached at the end. An electric current (which is why it is called hot) runs through it so that when the lesion is circled by the snare and tightened, the current cuts the stalk and coagulates any bleeding at the same time.
