Review These Basics on Stomal Procedure

A stoma is an opening in the abdominal wall that is created to connect a resected end of either the ileum or the colon to a sealed pouch appliance so that the undigested food and waste can be removed from the body. The stomal opening is created when the patient undergoes a resection of a diseased portion of either the entire colon (colectomy) or a part of it (partial colectomy). This procedure may be temporary or could be permanent.
