Answer: Gold Probe and Injection Gold Probe are brand names for a cautery device, according to Michael Weinstein, MD, a gastroenterologist in Washington, D.C., and a former member of the CPT Advisory Panel. The proper code will depend on why and in what section of the gastrointestinal tract the probe is being used.

If the probe is used on a bleeding arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the colon, for example, report 45382 (colonoscopy with control of bleeding, any method), Weinstein says. If the probe is used for polyp destruction in the colon, report 45383 (colonoscopy with ablation of tumor[s], polyp[s], or other lesion[s] not amenable to removal by hot biopsy forceps, bipolar cautery or snare technique).
