General Surgery Coding Alert

ICD-10:

Update Laryngeal Cancer Coding This Fall

Change ‘other’ to ‘overlapping.

Not much changes but the code number once you begin to report malignant larynx cancer with ICD-10 instead of ICD-9. You should be ready to make the change on October 1 of this year when the new code set goes into effect.

Match-up: Here are the ICD-9 choices that you currently have for malignant larynx cancer:

  • 161.0 — Malignant neoplasm of glottis
  • 161.1 — Malignant neoplasm of supraglottis
  • 161.2 — Malignant neoplasm of subglottis
  • 161.3 — Malignant neoplasm of laryngeal cartilages
  • 161.8 — Malignant neoplasm of other specified sites of larynx
  • 161.9 — Malignant neoplasm of larynx unspecified.

Once ICD-10 goes into effect, you should switch to these codes that closely parallel the ICD-9 structure:

  • C32.0 — Malignant neoplasm of glottis
  • C32.1 — Malignant neoplasm of supraglottis
  • C32.2 — Malignant neoplasm of subglottis
  • C32.3 — Malignant neoplasm of laryngeal cartilage
  • C32.8 — Malignant neoplasm of overlapping sites of larynx
  • C32.9 — Malignant neoplasm of larynx, unspecified.

Notice: The one difference between the code sets is that for the fourth digit, “8,” ICD-9 identifies “other” sites, while ICD-10 identifies “overlapping” sites of larynx.
