WATCH NURSING HOME-RELATED BILLING CAREFULLY

New OIG report points the way to more scrutiny.

DME suppliers shouldn't miss the latest warning that the feds are closely monitoring Part B billing for residents of skilled nursing facilities.

The report, "Medicare Part B Services for Nursing Home Residents: 2002" (OEI-05-06-00240), looks at Medicare Part B services and allowed payments for nursing home residents not in a Medicare Part A-covered stay during calendar year 2002.

"Part B payments for beneficiaries residing in nursing homes are particularly vulnerable to fraud and abuse," says the OIG in announcing the audit

Translated: Building on this work, OIG plans to assess more current data to help identify potential patterns and areas of questionable billing--and prime targets are suppliers of durable medical equipment.
