CAse Mix Tip:

Gain Points For Stroke Late Effects

Dysphagia brings more opportunities for case mix points.

You may be eligible for case mix points for late effects of stroke diagnoses, either immediately following the acute episode or several months or years later, says Judy Adams, RN, BSN, HCS-D, with LarsonAllen in Charlotte, NC. A diagnosis from the Neuro 3, Stroke category awards one case mix point under equation 2 (episode 1 or 2 in a sequence of adjacent episodes and 14 or higher therapy visits in the episode).

You'll earn two to six additional case mix points for a stroke dysphagia diagnosis in the clinical dimension if the patient has dysphagia plus one of the 438.xx (Late effects of cerebrovascular disease) diagnoses; one to eight points if there is a 438.xx diagnosis plus the patient requires assistance with dressing the upper or lower body in M0650/660; or one to five case mix points with a diagnosis from 438.xx plus a score of 3 or more in ambulation (M0700), says Lisa Selman-Holman, JD, BSN, RN, HCS-D, COS-C, consultant and principal of Selman-Holman & Associates in Denton, TX.
