Reader Question:

Check With Clinician For Sequencing

Question: I know that the V57.x codes (Care involving the use of rehabilitation procedures) can only be listed in the primary diagnosis position and should only be used when the primary reason for admission is therapy. But should I always list a V57.x code as primary when the primary reason for admission is therapy? If not, how do I decide when it's appropriate to use these codes?

Answer: Refer to the general rules for using V codes. If you are providing aftercare for a resolving condition or for continuous care for a long-term condition, V codes are appropriate as primary. If the care you are providing is for an acute condition or a complication, then the V codes, including the V57.x codes, are not appropriate.
