Reader Question:

Stick With Aftercare For Tendon Repair

Question: We are providing care for a patient who recently had a quadriceps tendon repair. I’m inclined to report V58.43 (Aftercare following surgery for injury and trauma) for this patient, but I’m wondering if I should be reporting something else. Also, should I list 891.2 (Open wound of knee, leg [except thigh], and ankle; with tendon involvement) as a secondary code to indicate the torn tendon?

Answer: V58.43 is the correct code for aftercare for repair of this tendon. You should not code 891.2 unless there was a trauma wound associated with the torn tendon. A surgical wound created to repair the tendon is counted as a surgical wound in the OASIS assessment, not in the coding.
