READER QUESTION:

Try Acute Code For Anemia Due To Bleeding

Question: We are providing physical therapy and occupational therapy for a patient who fell and injured her left hip resulting in a large hematoma. While in the hospital, she was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in her left thigh. She was also diagnosed with anemia due to bleeding to the hematoma and was given blood at the hospital for this. I am not sure how to code for the anemia, since we are still monitoring this condition.

Answer: If the patient still has anemia, then code the anemia due to acute blood loss, 285.1 (Acute posthemorrhagic anemia).
