Home Health ICD-9/ICD-10 Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

Does Home Health Equal Bedbound?

Question: When should we use the new V code V49.84? It seems like this would be appropriate for all of our home health claims.

Answer: V49.84 (Bed confinement status) is a status code indicating that the patient is bedbound. Not all home health clients are bedbound, but this code would be appropriate as a secondary code for those who are.

Being bedbound affects care, for example, when the primary diagnosis is a decubitus. This code also indicates that a patient is homebound and includes those patients who have to be lifted out of bed.
