READER QUESTIONS:

Give Details for Robot-Assisted Surgery

Question: What's the correct way to code a robot-assisted coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)? Should I list 17.41 along with 36.11 for the CABG?

-- Vermont Subscriber.

Answer: You are correct in listing 36.11 (Aortocoronary bypass of one coronary artery). You should also list 39.61 (Cardiopulmonary bypass [heart lung machine]) and 00.16 (Pressurized treatment of venous bypass graft [conduit] with pharmaceutical substance) if the physician also performed these procedures.

If the open procedure included a robot-assisted procedure, then you would add 17.41 (Open robotic assisted procedure). Sequence the primary procedure, 36.11, first.

OASIS C has a new data item that will include inpatient procedures, which includes four places for appropriate codes.
