READER QUESTIONS:

List Aftercare First For CABG Patient

Question: We are providing wound care, dressing changes, monitoring the post-op condition, and teaching disease process and infection control for a patient who recently had a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) due to coronary artery disease. How should we code for him?

Answer: As long as everything is routine, sequence V58.73 (Aftercare following surgery of the circulatory system, NEC) first.

Next, code the coronary artery disease with a code from the 414 category. Then list any other comorbidities that affect the plan of care or the patient's prognosis.

Finally, list postsurgical status code V45.81 (Aortocoronary bypass status) and the surgical dressing change code, V58.31 (Encounter for change or removal of surgical wound dressing).
