Question: Our new patient has organic brain syndrome secondary to anoxic brain injury due to cardiac arrest during a procedure. How should I code for him? You might also want to list 997.1 (Cardiac complications) and 427.5 (Cardiac arrest).

Answer: For this patient, list the following diagnosis codes:
• M0230a: 997.01 (Central nervous system complication) and
• M0240b: 310.9 (Unspecified nonpsychotic mental disorder following organic brain damage).
Watch for: New ICD-9-CM codes for 2008 will include a code for history of cardiac arrest, which would be more appropriate for this patient.
