READER QUESTIONS :

You Can List V Codes as Primary Diagnoses

Question: I am a new coder, and I could use some advice. I am getting conflicting answers in regards to coding insurance patients. Are we allowed to code a V code as a primary diagnosis?

-- Colorado Subscriber

Answer:All providers and payers are required to follow official coding guidelines according to HIPAA regulations, so insurance payers should accept V codes as the primary diagnosis, when appropriate. Occasionally you'll encounter a payer who is "behind the times" and will not accept valid codes.
