As of Jan. 1, you shouldn't use occurrence code 42 on your hospice claims when the beneficiary moves without a transfer, HHH MAC CGS reminds hospices in its December newsletter for providers. In this scenario, the hospice benefit period will update with a termination date equal to the "TO" date on the claim, and a revocation indicator will post, CGS explains.

Hospices also shouldn't use OC 42 when a patient transfers to another hospice or when a patient is discharged for cause, CGS adds.

CGS's article is at www.cgsmedicare.com/hhh/pubs/mb_hhh/2011/12_2011/index.html#013. CMS's CR on the topic is online at www.cms.gov/Transmittals/downloads/R2258CP.pdf and the MLN Matters article is online at www.cms.gov/MLNMattersArticles/Downloads/MM7473.pdf.
