Brooks-LaSure Steps Into CMS Administrator Position

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has an official Administrator once again. President Biden announced Chiquita Brooks-LaSure as his nominee back in February, but the U.S. Senate confirmed her only on May 25. After an April 15 confirmation hearing, the Senate Finance Committee “failed to report favorably” on her nomination. The “no” votes from Republican senators appeared to be in response to CMS’ revocation of Texas’ 1115 Medicaid waiver. Brooks-LaSure formerly held positions at both the Office of Management and Budget and CMS. She will be the first Black woman to lead CMS. “We are pleased to welcome Chiquita Brooks-LaSure as the new Administrator and applaud her confirmation,” said NHPCO CEO Edo Banach in a release. “She understands the inner workings of government and has a deep appreciation for health advocacy.” “Chiquita Brooks-LaSure brings solid experience to a very difficult job,” said NAHC President Bill Dombi in reaction to her confirmation. “Over the years, she has demonstrated a high degree of capability and the versatility to handle the wide range on matters that occur in Medicare and Medicaid,” Dombi said in NAHC’s member newsletter.
